Substance Abuse and Coagulopathy

2021
Coagulopathies are a highly concerning cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitals that drive significant economic burden in our healthcare system. Drug-induced bleeding is commonly associated with NSAID use; however, recent clinical literature has linked illicit and recreational drug use to coagulopathy with significant morbidity and mortality. Nutraceuticals and over the counter agents have also been linked to liver disease and have herbal-drug interactions that can precipitate liver damage. This chapter discusses the prevalence of substance abuse, over the counter medications, and coagulopathies and focuses on in-depth assessment of patients and treatment.
