To investigate the relationship between professional value and occupational burnout of nurses working in emergency department of educational hospitals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences

Background: Occupational burnout is one of the common syndromes due to stress among nurses. Nurses should be able to respond to ethical conflicts by using professional value. This study aimed to determine the relationship between professional value and occupational burnout of nurses working in the emergency department of educational hospitals at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Method: This cross sectional study participated 241 nurses from six educational hospitals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran during 2018 using convenience sampling . The Maslach Burnout questionnaire and a professional nursing questionnaire were used for data collection. Data were described by mean(±standard deviation), and frequency percentage and also analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression using SPSS 18. Results: The mean of occupational burnout score was 70.71± 15.25. The mean of score for emotional exhaustion was 27.78±11.57, depersonalization was 13.34±5.37 and personal accomplishments was 29.64±10.63. The mean score of professional value was 88.25±22.0, that was in the medium level. There was a significant reverse relationship between professional value and occupational burnout (r=-0.19, p = 0.01, 95% CI= -0.23, -0.03). The degree of burnout in the study group was reduced by increasing degree of professional value. The demographic data had no association with occupational burnout ( all p>0.05). Conclusion: Occupational burnout in emergency department nurses is high. According to the results of this study, professional value is one of the factors that has association with occupational stress and burnout therefore, continuous education is recommended for emergency department nurses to decreas occupational burnout and stress .
