Blunt splenic trauma in a 9-year-old boy with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia

1994
This is the first reported association of blunt splenic rupture and Glanzmann's thrombasthenia in a 9-year-old boy. Splenic salvage procedures are currently preferred in the treatment of traumatic splenic injuries in children because of the high risk of overwhelming infection after splenectomy. Despite intensive conservative treatment, our patient remained hemodynamically unstable. We performed a total splenectomy due to difficulty in achieving hemostasis. We believe it is necessary to choose appropriate treatment according to the pathophysiology of the bleeding tendency in children with splenic rupture.
