Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a pearl earring: de-and re-restored

1995
J. Vermeer's Girl with a pearl earring (c. 1665) was restored in the summer of 1994 in full view of the public. The painting had been restored several times, including at least once prior to its acquisition by the Mauritshuis in 1903, as evidenced by documentation from museum files. The present conservators were therefore aware that the painting had already been subjected to lining, at least twice, as well as to surface cleaning, varnish regeneration, revarnishings and retouchings.
