Compared to conventional cities, tourist urbanization tendsto respond to unique, functional and structurally differentiated urbanpractices. The economic crisis (2008) and economic adjustmentpolicies have affected these enclaves, both in terms of their role astourist destinations and their urban character. For various reasons,many of them are becoming new deteriorated spaces within cities.The aim of this article is to study the evolution of urban policiesaffecting tourist resorts, concluding with those forged within thecontext of the economic crisis. It begins with an analysis of urbanprecariousness and tourist urbanization, followed by a discussion ofurban tourist policies in the Balearic Islands, highlighting themethodological changes in intervention strategies, growingderegulation of management practices and abuse of theming as ameans of enhancing the unique features of destinations.
