Multi-LoD Surface Reconstruction Using Stratified Contour Extraction

The three-dimensional point cloud obtained by laser scanning has a wide range of applications in fields such as surveying and mapping engineering. Surface reconstruction is a key step of transforming the scanned point cloud into a finally usable model. Using the stratified point cloud, a new method of contour reconstruction and multi-LoD (level of detail) expression is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is able to achieve the contour expression under the specified level of detail. The proposed method belongs to the step-by-step refinement method, which indicates that a complete model is not required before simplification. The generated contours are consistent with the definition of concave hull in computer graphics. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods in reconstruction effect and efficiency.
