Comparison of Different Types of Multi-screen Method and Element of Traditional Animation on Human Experience

2021
Animators often difficult to choose the best display screen and animation elements to make a good animation. This paper aims to examine the impact of a different display screen and traditional animation elements on the human experience. This paper analyzes the impact of projection on single screen display, projection on multi-screen display (screen x), and projection on cube screen display on several participants. Two types of animation were created, including Four Seasons (i.e., contain many visual effects with less story, called element-based) and Serendipity in Bamboo Grove (i.e., contain many stories with fewer visual effects, called story-based). After that, participants watched the animation on different types of display screens. The questionnaire and interview session was conducted to collect participants’ answer, and their answer was analyzed using statistical analysis method. The questionnaire focuses on six animation design areas such as audience emotion, plot expression, style expression, space design, and dynamic performance. Simultaneously, the focus of the interview question was asked about animation style and display screen. The results showed that participants score in story-based animation was higher than element-based animation on a single screen and story-based animation was greater than element-based animation in screen x. Contrary, in the cube screen, participants score was higher in element-based animation than story-based animation. This study found that the contents of the animation itself are an essential factor for designing story-based animation. While, when designing the element-based animation, consider utilizing the display method. Finally, this result could be used as guidance for animators when they develop traditional animation.
