Effect of Bacteriuria on the Fetus

ANY measure that decreases the proportion of infants of low birth weighty¶ is of great significance. Recently Kass4 , 5 has reported that pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria have an increased incidence of premature births∥ that can be prevented by treatment of bacteriuria during pregnancy. Some studies support his findings6 , 7; others do not.8 9 10 11 12 13 We obtained the results reported in this paper by determining the outcome of 230 bacteriuric pregnancies from a total of 395 bacteriuric pregnancies (6.5 per cent) found by screening of 6048 pregnancies from August, 1958, to January, 1965.
