A Methodology for Convergence Between Ginga and HbbTV

2019
Broadcast environments are currently undergoing a worldwide revolution driven by the integration of broadband services. Such a convergence, named Integrated Broadcast-Broadband (IBB), resulted in new interactive specifications; however there is no global IBB standard. The present article addresses this problem, by proposing a convergence methodology regarding Ginga, developed in Brazil, and Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV), created in Europe. Experiments applying online and local HbbTV applications showed the feasibility of this proposal and led to the development of a support tool able to embed HbbTV applications as media elements in Nested Context Language (NCL) documents, which consequently made them executable by Ginga-NCL receivers.
