Double read head for the measurement of differential effects on a grating scale

A monolithic double grating head makes the readout of a single grating scale by means of a diffractive interferometric technique, thereby allowing the real time measurement of differential effects taking place in the scale. This arrangement allows the high resolution measurement of strain, temperature, as well as nanometer defects on the grating scale.
