Effect of Tensile Stress on Hardness and Elastic Modulus of Low Carbon Steel Strip

2010
The tensile stress was applied to the low carbon steel strip using homemade mini tensile test equipment. The hardness and elastic modulus under tensile state were tested, and the relationship between them was analyzed. The hardness of the two materials under different tensile stresses was simulated by using finite element method. The results show that the hardness of the steel strip decreased at first and then increased with increasing of the tensile stress. And the transition point was the yield strength. The tensile stress which was smaller than the yield point stress had slight effect on the hardness of the materials, while the effect was significant as the stress was larger than the yield point stress. The simulated results were consistent with the tested results. When the tensile stress and the hardening rate of the material were large, the tensile stress had little effect on the hardness, and no more distinct effect on the elastic modulus.
