Medical education in the United Kingdom: Numerous positive indicators leading to a thriving specialty

Teaching and training in healthcare traditionally used to take a back seat. The general impression was that all doctors working in a teaching setup, irrespective of their teaching skills would take part in teaching. There was no impetus on doctors to train as clinical teachers by undertaking teaching courses and qualifications in order to improve their teaching skills.1-3 Furthermore, there was no formal concept of the assessment of teachers regarding their ability to teach. Hence, despite their crucial role in imparting medical education, clinical teachers were not trained to teach.
