Distribution and biological parameters of pacific herring in the Okhotsk Sea in 20012004 are considered. In spring, pre-spawning Gizhiginsk-Kamchatka herring was observed mostly in the northeastern part of the Sea, but already spawned Okhotsk herring dominated in the northwestern part. Since 2003, the herring biomass increased and its feeding areas widened. Trawl surveys in spring and autumn are concluded as necessary for realistic information about dynamics of the herring abundance and biomass in the Okhotsk Sea. The estimations obtained in spring and autumn should be combined with taking into account fish distribution. The herring stock assessments made by different methods are compared. Utilization possibilities of the herring resources in the Okhotsk Sea are discussed.
