Everyday Citizenship of Children fromBritish Asian andMinority Ethnic Communities.
2016
This paper explores the ways in which
children express citizenship in their
everyday lives, thereby creating a sense of
identity. In particular it explores this from
the perspective of children from Asian and
other minority ethnic communities in the
UK. The paper pays particular attention to
«Asian» and «Muslim» children, as these
complex and multi-faceted categories are
subject of particular concern by policy
makers today. By a focus on the everyday
and cultural we can critique individualistic
conceptions of citizenship, subvert the
adult/child (citizen/non-citizen) binary,
contest the myth of the passive child and
present a more nuanced conception of
ethnic minority children’s identities.
