RENEWAL OF FULLY DETERIORATED SEWERS - THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGINEERING DUE DILIGENCE

The paper's focus is on the importance of paying attention to details in engineering design and installation of pipe lining systems in the maintenance and rehabilitation of gravity sewers. The paper uses the case of a large diameter sanitary interceptor sewer with a differentially corroded crown and unstable soil conditions to highlight the importance of considering sectional geometry and soil conditions in the design. The paper emphasizes that it remains the engineer's professional responsibility to evaluate all aspects of a proposed rehabilitation project prior to specifying which technologies and which design specifications may apply. Also, as part of their professional responsibility, engineers must better educate themselves regarding sewer renewal design and practice.
