The environment and its impact on respiratory health

2020
This chapter covers the impact of the environment on the pulmonary system. It describes the impact of noxious airborne substances on the respiratory system; covering air pollution, altitude, cold and dry air, and the unique environment of the indoor swimming pool. The chapter addresses the question of whether we should avoid all exercise in polluted environments. It reviews the impact of altitude and advice that should be given to athletes traveling to altitude. The chapter provides strategies to avoid the deleterious effect of environment on the athletes. Sport and exercise takes many forms and occurs in a diverse range of environmental conditions, each providing unique stresses on the respiratory system. The best way to understand air pollution is to think of it as a complex mixture of gases and particles. Exercise places distinct challenges on the respiratory system, particularly during exposure to air pollution.
