Shadows and light: An exploration of leadership and betrayal

The aim of this paper is to explore, through a psychoanalytic lens, (in particular the paranoid schizoid and depressive positions) the experience of leaders who make major, tough decisions that impact their followers. In this context, the terms 'virtuous betrayal' and 'betrayal aversion' are explored. Contemporary organisational life is described and from this, it is suggested that the conditions for virtuous betrayal are rife. Two case studies are presented where virtuous betrayals by leaders of their followers are analysed.
