Eye-safe Diode Lidar For Tree Heights Profiling And Estimation OfForest Biomass

2003
In this report the mathematics modeling principles of using a lidar backscattered signal to provide information on forest recovering and dynamics are presented. It is demonstrated that an indirect approach may correlate the laser pulse backscattered intensity to the density and height of vegetation. This method for ecological parameter evaluation by using vegetation indexes is discussed. A miniature diode lidar is also presented as a natural detriment indicator for tree height profiling and forest biomass estimation. The operational principles of such a lidar are also explained. This kind of compact lidar could be installed in a light air moving platform for forest monitoring.
