Purpose: Predicting neurodevelopmental outcome in neonates treated with extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure remains challenging. No single parameter is capable of predicting long-term neurodevelopmental outcome. In neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, the combination of imaging, the return of sleep-wake-cycle (SWC) on electroencephalography (EEG) over time, and feeding mode at discharge has been shown to be a useful prognostic method if applied together.
