AFIXOS DA MARGEM ESQUERDA: REFLEXÕES SOBRE PREFIXAÇÃO EM UM DOCUMENTO DO SÉCULO XIV

Dealing with several word formation processes in Portuguese, this work focuses on prefixation, which has no wellestablished criteria for its definition and classification, neither on normative grammars nor on morphology manuals. We usually find morphological elements attached to the left of a particular word, which can or cannot result in a change of meaning. So, it is possible to verify that these “linguistic elements” do not show a homogeneous characteristic, what makes it necessary to propose a new classification that cannot be applied only to a prefix. This article is dedicated to this new classification, using words taken from a corpus of Portuguese language of the fourteenth century.
