Inhibition of crude lectin from Sophora alopecuroides on nine common pathogenic bacteria

2012
Objective To detect the inhibitory effects of lectins from Sophora alopecuroides seeds on several common bacteria. Methods The extraction of crude lectins from Sophora alopecuroides seeds was obtained after ammonium sulfate precipitation under different saturation and dialysis, and then its agglutinating activity was detected with erythrocytes of chickens and mice and antibacterial activity was measured by nine kinds of bacteria, such as,Staphylococcus epidermidis,Klebsiella penumoniae,Enterococcus faecalis, etc. Results The crude lectin showed different degrees of aggregation function on red blood cells of chickens and mice. The lectins had broadly inhibitory effects on the tested microbes, thereinto, the inhibitory effects on Shigella flexneri,Klebsiella pneumoniae,Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes and Escherichia coli were obvious. Conclusions These findings indicate that the crude lectins of Sophora alopecuroides display inhibitory effects on all the tested bacteria.Meanwhile, the inhibitory activities for gram negative bacteria are remarkable. This result should provide the experimental basis for the further development of clinical antibiotics of Sophora alopecuroides lectins in the future.
