Disclosed are a failure detection method and device, with contents comprising: receiving, by a terminal device, a failure detection instruction input by a user, and determining a service type of a failure to be detected according to the failure detection instruction; determining failure detection contents according to the service type; starting to detect the failure detection contents to obtain a detection result; and displaying the detection result, and in this way, whether it is in a placement stage of the terminal device or a use stage of the terminal device, when it is necessary to determine whether a failure occurs to the terminal device, the failure detection instruction is directly triggered, and then the failure detection contents corresponding to the service type of the failure to be detected are detected, thereby effectively realizing the self-detection capability of the terminal device, increasing the locating speed of the failure and improving the precision of failure detection.
