Vibrational spectroscopic study of alkylenediammonium hexachlorostannate compounds, NH3(CH2)nNH3SnCl6 (n = 3 and 4)

2004
The infrared and Raman spectra of propylenediammonium hexachlorostannate, NH3(CH2)3NH3SnCl6, and its butylenediammonium homologue, NH3(CH2)4NH3SnCl6, were recorded at ambient temperature and interpreted on the basis of literature data. All the characteristics of the IR and Raman bands of anions and cations in these compounds were identified. The combination bands observed in the 2300-1900 cm-1 infrared spectral region for both compounds indicate that they contain CNH3 groups. Evidence for the existence of weak hydrogen bonds was found on examining the 2400-3200 cm-1 infrared spectral region. Thus, anions and cations are weakly connected by hydrogen bonding inside the crystals. The anions were found, in these two compounds, to be slightly distorted from their free Oh octahedral symmetry.
