Counseling Adults on Physical Activity: How to Capture Your Work?

Abstract Counseling patients on increasing physical activity to decrease risk for many chronic diseases takes time and it has historically been difficult for nurse practitioners to code, bill and receive appropriate payment for providing it. However, there are ways to optimize reimbursement for health promotion counseling. This brief report reviews the current CPT codes that can be used in combination with the appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes and accurate documentation. Using this timely information NP's should be able to optimize their coding and documentation to reflect the services they have provided.
