Wettability of Al-Mg alloy based on laser modification and self-assembled monolayers

2012
In order to prepare super-hydrophobic metal surface with higher mechanical intensity and longevity of service, three surface textures including frustum of a cone, notch of taper hole and frustum of a pyramid, were manufactured on Al-Mg alloy with laser surface modification method, and the self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) was deposited on the textured surface with self-assembled method.Scanning electron microscopy, surface profiler and contact angle measurement were used to analyze the surface properties of specimens. The results show that after laser manufacturing and preparing hydrophobicity FDTS and OTS self-assembled monolayers, the contact angles tend to smaller as the increment of the spacing of surface texture, and tend to bigger as the increment of the height of surface texture.Maximum contact angle of 156° and the super-hydrophobic surface can be acquired. After laser manufacturing and preparing hydrophilic APS self-assembled monolayers, the contact angles tend to bigger as the increment of the spacing of surface texture, and tend to smaller as the increment of the height of surface texture.Minimum contact angle of 0° or so and the super-hydrophilic surface can be obtained. The wettability of aluminum-magnesium alloy surface can be adjusted by laser surface modification method and self-assembled monolayers.
