Investigation on Film Cooling in a Kerosene/ GOX Combustion Chamber

2009
The understanding of the mechanisms of heat transfer and advanced cooling techniques is the key for mastering the designing of reliable and efficient combustion chambers. Within the framework of the multi-national and EU-funded project ‘Aerodynamic and Thermal Load Interactions with Lightweight Advanced Materials for High Speed Flight’, short ATLLAS, a single element combustion chamber for gaseous oxygen and kerosene has been developed and characterized. This setup is now used for the investigation and assessment of a variety of experiments dealing with different aspects of cooling techniques such as film and transpiration cooling and also serves as platform for tests with newly developed ceramic matrix composite materials. This paper presents the design and conduction of film cooling experiments and compares the results with numerical models known from open literature.
