Design of Octagonal-Shaped CP Antenna for RFID Handheld Reader Applications

In this article, a circularly polarized octagonal-shaped slot antenna is proposed for radio frequency identification (RFID) reader application. The bandwidth and circulation polarization of proposed design are improved by changing the size of corner truncation and the octagonal-shaped slot. With an overall size of \(65 \times 65 \times 1.6 \text { mm}^{3}\), the designed antenna achieves measured return loss bandwidth of around 35 MHz (897–932 MHz) and axial ratio of bandwidth 10 MHz (913–923 MHz). The printed antenna agrees a good promise between simulate and measured values. The antenna exhibits a wide beam-width characteristic, around 113\(^{\circ }\) in the upper hemisphere. The proposed antenna is suitable for RFID short-range reading applications.
