Evaluation of anti ulcer activity of methanolic extract of LEAVES ofCatharanthus Roseus in experimental rats

2013
The present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of Catharanthus roseus leaf extract against Forced swim induced gastric ulcer. The methanolic leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus at dose of 250 & 500 mg/kg Per Oral (P.O), markedly decrease the incidence of ulcers in Forced swim induced rats. In Forced swim induced rats, there was an increase in the ulcerative index as compared to the control group. The methanolic leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus at dose of, 500 mg/kg showed significant reduction in the above parameter which was comparable to the standard drug Ranitidine (5 mg/kg). Catharanthus roseus extract showed protection index of 62.56 %, whereas standard drug Ranitidine showed protection index 78.26 %.These results may further suggest that methanolic extract was found to possess antiulcerogenic as well as ulcer healing properties, which might be due to its antisecretory activity.
