Simulation based design of reluctance motors for traction applications in hybrid and electric vehicles

2014
Electric and hybrid vehicles are mostly reliant on permanent magnet motors for traction. This paper focusses on the design challenges of alternative motor topologies. Beneficial attributes of switched reluctance (SR) and synchronous reluctance (SynchRel) motors are considered and requirements for software design tools are outlined. Developments to software tools to address multiphysics and experience with the design of prototypes are presented.
