Quality of life assessment of pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS

HIV-positive pregnant women ought to be monitored to cover different needs of the pregnancy-puerperium cycle, counting with a conjoint act of a multiprofessional team. This time period is characterized not only by the challenge of facing a chronic disease like AIDS, but specially by the fear and guilt towards the possibility of transmitting the virus to the baby. Thinking about the importance of this content, the objective was to assess the quality of life of pregnant women infected by HIV and to describe the sociodemographic aspects of pregnant women infected by HIV. This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach that was performed with pregnant women women who live with HIV and receive treatment at the STI, HIV/AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Specialized Care Service of Sinop, MT, in the time period from december 2016 to february 2017, data gathering was carried through an individual interview in a private room, where there were only the researcher and the pregnant woman. A characterization of the sociodemographic variables was done and to assess the quality of life of people with HIV/AIDS was applied the Targeted Quality of Life (HAT-QoL) in which the following areas were analysed: general activities, sexual activities, concern about confidentiality, concern about health, financial concerns, HIV awareness, life satisfaction, questions about medication and confidence in the professional. The data was organized in an Excel worksheet and the following measures were calculated: average, median, minimum value, maximum value and standard deviation. The highest scores were in the areas of HIV acceptance, life satisfaction and professional confidence showing contentment in these aspects.The areas that showed the lower scores were about confidentiality, concerns about the medication and financial concerns.It's been concluded that the quality of life of these HIV-positive pregnant women was affected, mainly by the characteristics of the social aspects and by their own perception of the diagnosis or the clinical circumstances due to the HIV/AIDS infection. These results confirm the need of a complete approach towards the health of these women that can help and offer them the support they need to deal with the condition that interfere with the cultural and psychological factors.
