Tree Kangaroo Populations in Managed Facilities

Abstract This chapter provides a comprehensive, chronological and historical account of the populations of tree kangaroos (Dendrolagus spp.) in global managed facilities. Historical data and information were obtained from many sources including literature, research, discussions and reports from noted tree kangaroo specialists. Census information in this chapter has been derived from International Zoo Yearbook (Vols. 1–27) (1960–1986) and tree kangaroo international studbooks. Population management strategies are described to maintain healthy ex-situ tree kangaroo populations that are genetically diverse, demographically stable, and behaviorally competent.
