Ultraviolet images of galaxies from the Optical Monitor on XMM-Newton

2002
A large number of galaxies, both normal and active, have been observed in ultraviolet light (140-270 nm) by the Optical Monitor on XMM-Newton. In many cases it is the first time that they have been investigated in this waveband. We present some of these images, and discuss the potential uses of the UV surface brightness distribution and morphology, in association with X-ray data, for galaxy evolution and cosmological studies.
