Numeriacl Studies on the Behavior of cold-formes steel self drilling screw lap joint under tension

2015
Self-drilling screws are generally used for connecting roofing and cladding sheets. In order to understand the behaviour of such joints, numerical studies have been conducted on the lap joints made upon cold-formed steel sheets with self-drilling screws. The sheet elements are modelled by using shell elements and the screw is modelled by using solid elements. The material properties are assigned as multi-linear model based on the tension coupon results for the respective sheeting. The contact interfaces are modelled by using automatic surface to surface interaction. The model is analysed under tensile shear loading under displacement controlled loading. Three combinations of lap joint such as 3-2mm, 3-2.5mm, 2.5-2mm have been considered in the studies. The results of the analysis are compared in terms of the load-deflection response and failure modes with that of the respective experimental results. The deformation obtained from analysis modelling is bearing and tilting is in close agreement with the experimental results
