The Deployment ofa Long-Term SeafloorSeismic Networkon theJuan de Fuca Ridge

2007
From 2003-2006, a novelseismic network comprising sevenshort-period corehole seismometers and a broadband GuralpCMG-1TOBSwasdeployed using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)inasubseafloor configuration onthe Endeavour Segment oftheJuandeFucamid-ocean ridge aspart ofa multi-disciplinary prototype NEPTUNE experiment to investigate the linkages betweenseismicdeformation, hydrothermal fluxes, andmicrobial productivity. Thenetworks recorded highquality datathatillustrate theadvantages ofusing anROV todeploy seismometers inwell-coupled configurations awayfromtheeffects ofoceancurrents. Thedataispresently beinganalyzed tounderstand thelinkages betweenseismic deformation andhydrothermal circulation, andthenatureof seismic swarmsthatareassociated withridge spreading events. A subsetoftheseismometers willbe incorporated intothe NEPTUNE Canadacabled observatory.
