Friends in Ann Arbor

1998
In the fall of 1951, as we recall, Edith wrote to us from Switzerland for advice about coming to Ann Arbor, to take a position in the Astronomy Department of the University of Michigan. She had obtained our names from Professor Andreas Speiser, who had directed her doctoral work in mathematics. We responded by strongly encouraging her to come. A few months later she arrived in Ann Arbor and was soon established in an apartment close to the University. We were in touch with her from the start and thus began a long-lasting friendship.
