India is experiencing a digital revolution. E-Commerce is leading this revolution by showing a tremendous growth rate of about 50% enjoyed in the last five years. E-Commerce has revolutionized the transactional mechanism of purchase and sale of goods and services, and it appears as though all the providers are competing with each other in providing their goods and services on the Internet through ever innovative ways and schemes. This paper attempts to provide a thorough and detailed study of Indian e-commerce sector with regard to the immense market potential which, by and large, still remains untapped. The paper also outlines various segments of e-commerce, its key drivers and the conducive ecosystem which are pushing this phenomenal growth across these segments in India. The paper also focuses on the advantages e-commerce offers to the consumers along with the operational challenges that act as barriers in its effective implementation. Given all this and the employability potential of e-commerce in India, the paper also touches upon the prospect of the impending need for sharpening the focus on the e-commerce as a program of the study in the curriculum of commerce, which can prove to be the cornerstone in making commerce education more attractive to the prospective students.
