Network coding for transport

2021
Abstract In this chapter, we extend the ComNetsEmu emulator by implementing NC as VNF. Coding has two advantages when applied to transport, resilience and lower latency. Both are important metrics for the Tactile Internet and industry-related communications. We begin by providing an overview of how network coding can assist communications, followed by a description of the virtualized encoder and decoder instances. We consider two hands-on examples, a multihop recoding scenario, where the placement of recoders is investigated, and a scenario, where an SDN controller collects statistics from the network to adapt the redundancy created by the coding instances. The network coding and VNF examples demonstrate how NC can be brought into real-world implementations without requiring modifications of existing protocols.
