The invention discloses a PGNAA (prompt gamma neutron activation analysis) equipment characteristic gamma ray energy spectrum compensation algorithm. The principle of the algorithm is as follows: a proportional constant kEi (i=1-1024) of a measured substance is calculated, and compensation operation is performed on characteristic gamma ray energy spectrum by means of a load signal N and a no-load signal N0 of an ionization chamber (6) on a nucleonic belt weigher installed behind PGNAA equipment (1), thus solving the energy spectrum distortion phenomenon caused by the fact that the measured material itself absorbs the characteristic gamma ray. In a process that the PGNAA equipment characteristic gamma ray reaches a gamma ray detector through the measured material, part of the gamma ray is absorbed by the measured material itself, and the finally obtained characteristic gamma ray energy spectrum has a distortion phenomenon.
