Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an important therapeutic option for benign and malignant hematologic disorders. After HSCT, major goals of laboratory monitoring of chimerism are to determine progress of engraftment and risks of adverse outcome, including disease relapse, graft rejection and graft-versus-host disease. Reproducible laboratory tests are available for monitoring, though a gold standard quantitative method is not defined and absolute cutoffs of percent chimerism are not widely accepted outcome predictors.
