Художественное произведение как язык: о понятии экземплификации

The article is devoted to the controversy about the concept of exemplification, which is regarded, according to Goodman, as one of the most important notions describing the specificity of aesthetic sign systems. Goodman made the conclusion that art was characterized by a special type of relationship between the sign and the signified, that is, exemplification, which is essentially identical to the symbolization. In the version of Goodman’s followers, Jensen, Elgin, art is presented as a separate symbolic form with its own characteristics. The work of art is an object which has its own way of functioning. It can be argued that to function as a work of art (within the framework of this theory) means to function symbolically. To determine the type of symbolization, a fine artistic taste and understanding of aestheticically relevant signals detected by exemplification are needed.
