Foundations for Social Change: Reflections on Ontario’s Poverty Reduction Strategy

Pedro Barata and Colette Murphy were responsible for Economic Justice / Poverty Reduction programs in two Toronto-based private charitable foundations (the Atkinson Charitable Foundation and the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, respectively) during the period surrounding the Ontario government’s 2008 commitment to a formal Poverty Reduction Strategy (roughly 2007 to 2010). In this article, they draw on key dynamics they experienced as funders, partners, and advocates during that period to reflect on an “emergence of change” paradigm and outline promising practices that foundations – and other advocates – may draw on to contribute to social change. Dans cet article, ils tirent parti des dynamiques cles qu'ils ont observees au cours de cette periode en tant que bailleurs de fonds, partenaires et porte-parole pour reflechir au paradigme de l’« emergence du changement » et definir des pratiques prometteuses que les fondations et autres acteurs pourraient utiliser pour contribuer au progres social.
