The interpretation of a distant radio probing using the standard assumption of a permittivity jump at the boundary between different layers results in significant errors in such a cases as an ice with its composition changing with depth or in the cases of dry and wet snow, wet sands and soil. The situation when the permittivity changes continuously and even smoothly up to a first derivative is common enough. This paper deals with the numeric simulation of a polarized probing wave passing through a smoothing layer.
