Urinary tract complaints in the GP consultation room - The difference between plain and complicated is relevant

2008
Urinary tract complaints featured frequently in the SESAM-2 study. Urinary tract complaints mainly concerned women aged between 15 and 44 years and men over 75. The spectrum of differential diagnoses is relatively comprehensible. Usually the urinary tract infections are uncomplicated, hardly requiring further diagnostic research eyond anamnesis, examination and urinary status. 84,6 % of the patients with urinary tract complaints received prescriptions (of antibiotics). Of general medical relevance is merely a differentiation between common and complicated urinary tract infections, adequate treatment, and prevention of possibly dangerous courses.
