Study on Temperature Induced Head Skew Error for Hard Disk Drivers

2012
When the disk is assembled into the hard disk base, it will introduce additional head position error and timing error comparing with in-situ disk writing technology. Head skew calibration is one of the key processes to ensure high servo performance during head switching seeks. The head skew has AC and DC components. In this paper, principle of DC head skew error is formulated, and temperature characteristics of the DC head skew error are analyzed. Then a compensation method for the temperature induced DC head skew error is proposed, so that temperature induced head skew error for hard disk drivers could be adequately compensated. Experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of the compensation scheme are given.
