There are many indications for thyroidectomy. The vast majority of the time, surgery can be accomplished via a standard cervical approach. However, there are circumstances in which a combined thoracic approach is necessary to completely and safely mobilize the thyroid. As such, the thoracic surgeon becomes an integral part in the preoperative assessment and surgical plan.
