Il 'Cristo portacroce' di Giorgio Vasari per Bindo Altoviti e una proposta per Cecchino Salviati

2019
The rediscovery of the "Christ carrying the Cross" painted by Giorgio Vasari for Bindo Altoviti in Rome in 1553 enables us to further piece together the patron's taste and the stylistic paths taken by the artist with respect to the first edition of the "Lives", published in 1550, and to the Roman artistic scene of the preceding decades. The author then analyses the stylistic models used by Vasari for the "Cristo portacroce", in particular Sebastiano del Piombo's paintings of the same subject and Michelangelo's "Christ " in Santa Maria sopra Minerva, but also the Venetian background that was so dear to the patron. The article then discusses the attribution of a portrait of Bindo Altoviti in an American private collection, formerly ascribed to Francesco Salviati and now given to Girolamo da Carpi.
