A method and apparatus for estimation of a Doppler frequency (fD) in a wireless telecommunication system, wherein data blocks (DB) each having at least one Pilot symbol (PS) are retransmitted with a predetermined retransmission delay in response to a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), wherein the Doppler frequency (fD) is calculated in a first operation mode (OM1) depending on a time interval (t) between two pilot symbols (PS) and in a second operation mode (OM2) depending on the retransmission delay.
