Analysis of the components of rhizome and leaf volatile oil from Pakistani Acorus plants

The essential oil (0.02 - 2 %) obtained from the rhizomes and leaves of Acorus calamus L. by hydrodistillation was analysed by GC and GC/MS. The main components of the rhizome and leaf oils are β-asarone, β-caryophyllene,shyobunone, epishyobunune, acolamone, isoacolamone and isocalamendiol. The composition of both the oils varies considerably.
