Rumenocentesis: a useful technique for diagnosis and monitoring of rumen health in cattle

2017
Rumenocentesis is the collection of rumen fluid by percutaneous needle aspiration, under local anaesthetic. It can be done in any ruminant, but is usually reserved for dairy herds, where the monitoring of rumen pH and other rumen health parameters can be particularly valuable. The most easily measurable rumen fluid characteristics include pH and visual (microscopical) assessments of protozoa population. Careful animal selection and skilled interpretation of findings are necessary to reach sound conclusions. Management decisions can be based on rumenocentesis findings alone, but preferably other herd health and performance information is used alongside rumen fluid results. Rumen fluid examination allows a more holistic approach to be taken for dairy cow nutrition, considering, as it does, the response of the rumen microbiome to the diet which is being fed.
