Developing Power Li-Ion Batteries for EV & HEV and Advanced Materials for New Generation Lithium Batteries, Based on Chinese National Projects

INTRODUCTION National Projects on development of advanced Li-ion batteries for EV & HEV (863 program) and new electrochemical material systems for advanced Li batteries (973 programs) were carried on for more than 10 years in China. Recently, they all are being planned & drawn up for next 5 to 20 years. So far, some significant progress on R & D and pilot production of Li-ion batteries with LiMn2O4 & LiFePO4 positive electrodes for EV, PHEV and Fuel cell/Li-ion battery for EV. Such electrical vehicles have been put in more & more demonstrations in next several years. In addition, new target for technology improvement of Li-ion batteries in next five years has been being made, Also, in the first step of 973 long term plan, a national program on investigation of new electrochemical material systems toward next generation batteries has been carried out from 2009 to 2013 which is organized by KLPSC & TIPS. These include R & D of high-energy-density energy storage and conversion systems with more than 300Wh/kg and a novel electrochemical capacitor or hybrid system with 5kW/kg & 20-50Wh/kg, etc. In this presentation, some more detailed description of two programs and their progress will be reported and discussed.
